The Deacon Ministry of Compassion and Mercy

Genesis 3:15, 3:21 - Finds its roots in the mercy of God.

Deut. 6:5, Lev. 19:8 - A love of God and love of neighbor was established in the law. It was the way God’s people were to live.

Isaiah 58:5-8 - The prophetic books continually demonstrate that one’s commitment to God is demonstrated by one’s acts of mercy.

Isaiah 61:1-2 - The coming Messiah would be characterized by mercy.

Luke 10:25-27 - Acts of mercy has a great deal to do with one’s salvation.

Acts 6:1-7 - The early Church raises up the importance of this ministry by establishing a deacon body.

Acts 7:59 - Stephen, one of the first deacons, gives words of mercy with his final breath (the first recorded martyr of the church was a deacon!).

James 2:1-24 - The credibility of one’s faith is found in merciful deeds.

Rev. 21:1-4 - The end of the whole story culminates in a glorious moment of grace, healing and redemption for the world.
