THE STUDENT BECOMES THE TEACHER
Christina asked to take home reading materials from the beginning of the reading program she is currently working through. She said she wanted to teach her younger sister the beginning of the phonics program.
The next week, Christina brought in two sets of graded worksheets and phonics spelling tests. Both her younger sister and younger brother had scored perfectly on all the worksheets and tests after not doing well on their first try.
Christina explained how she made her own cards, taught the early phonics rules, and showed her younger siblings how to mark syllables and blended sounds with colored pencil just as she had learned only last year.
Christina knows she is older than most kids just learning to read and she has explained that she does not want her brother and sister to learn how to read late like her. In a very real way, this simple act of a child is powerfully opposing the generational illiteracy and poverty that plague Cleveland.
Jesus taught us to pray for God's kingdom to come to earth. Consider Christina teaching reading to be a glorious answer to prayer.
