LIVING WATERS FOR THE WORLD
May 2007 Installation

“How will we know that the water is safe to drink?” asks the teacher in San Marcos. I am struck by the contrast of his earnest concern and how much we take for granted here in the USAOn my tenth mission trip with the BPC to Jacaltenango Guatemala I am part of the Living Waters for the World team.

Our “operating Partner” on this project is the elementary school in a small village named San Marcos. Jim and Bob are to instruct the locals on the installation, maintenance and operation of the water purification system. Linda and I are to train the teachers and parents on hygiene and use of purified water so that they can in turn teach the community who will have access to the system.

The men are quietly going about assembling the system using a lot of pictures and gestures and trying out phrases of encouragement to one another in English and Spanish.

The women arrive in their best clothing and giggle about sitting at real desks. We open each lesson with scripture references to Christ as the living water. Since they are very familiar with the Bible stories this establishes a deep connection between us.  As our lessons continue over three days it is apparent that they have all grasped the new concept that a lot of their illness is caused by bad water. We teach thru scripture, songs, crafts and skits. There is no sound sweeter than their laughter. We stress the use of pure water for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth and caring for baby. It will take many months before every home embodies the practices but we will return in January to visit our friends and hear how this project is going.

Tomorrow we have to leave Guatemala and the tests haven’t been completed due to power outages in the area. “How will we know that the water is safe to drink?” asks the teacher after the system is installed and we send thru a  “first batch” with bleach to purge the system. “We will run a second batch, wait 24 hours and you will test the water with these strips” replies Jim thru a translator.

The faith and patience demonstrated by the locals is truly admirable. They have never had easy access to pure water and may have to wait another day, but they gather and praise God for all that has been accomplished in His name already! There is an “inauguracion” of the system and we receive a plaque thanking the church. Many prayers are said in Spanish, Pop’til and English, the women shyly sing the songs we taught them. Happy tears are shed and blessings are extended. No one wants the time together to end.

48 hours later we arrive back in Ohio to hear the news, “They are drinking the water in San Marcos!”

To quote the vision statement of Living Waters for the World, we have been privileged to:“use the gift of clean water to bring together congregations with sisters and brothers in need, for a life-changing experience with the risen Christ”
